To save your document:

  1. Go to the File Menu and select Save. You can also press CTRL + S on your keyboard or click the Save icon (it looks like a floppy disk) on the toolbar.

  2. The very first time you save a file, the “Save As” dialog box will appear.

  3. In this box, you need to provide three key pieces of information:

    • File name: Give your document a descriptive name.

    • Save as type: For a standard Word document, this will default to “.doc”.

    • Save in: Choose the location (drive and folder) where you want to save the file.

  4. Click the Save button. Your file is now saved.

After you’ve named the file, clicking “Save” again will simply update the file with your latest changes without showing the dialog box.

Closing a Document

When you are finished working on a document, you should close it to free up your computer’s memory. To do this, go to the File Menu and select Close.

  • The Indian person’s want might be for chapattis, rice, and curry (protein deficient loog ).

  • The American person’s want might be a hamburger and fries. (mote loog) The underlying need is the same, but the want is specific.

3. Demand

Demand is the final step. It’s a want for a specific product that is backed by an ability and willingness to pay. You might want a Mercedes, but you only become part of the demand for it when you have the money to buy one. (ish liye mehnat kar ladle)

The Scope of Marketing: What Does it Cover?

Marketing is a vast field. Its scope includes understanding what to market, who to market to, and what strategies to use.

1. What Can Be Marketed?

Marketing isn’t just for physical products. Marketers are involved in promoting 10 different types of entities: Goods, Services, Events, Experiences, Persons, Places, Properties, Organizations, Information, and Ideas.

2. The People Involved: Marketers and Prospects

  • A Marketer is someone who is seeking a response from another party. This response could be a purchase, a vote, attention, or a donation. (response seek karne wala)

  • The Prospect is the other party (the potential customer) from whom the marketer wants a response. (jis se response seek hoga)

3. Core Marketing Concepts

The scope of marketing involves focusing on several key areas:

  • Value and Satisfaction: Creating products and services that deliver perceived value and lead to customer satisfaction.

  • Consumer Behavior: Studying how individuals and groups select, buy, use, and dispose of goods to satisfy their needs.

  • Competition: Analyzing competing offerings to create a stronger, more attractive product.

  • STP (Segmentation, Targeting, and Positioning): This is a foundational marketing strategy.

    • Segmentation: Dividing the broad market into smaller groups of consumers with similar needs.

    • Targeting: Selecting one or more of these segments to enter.

    • Positioning: Creating a clear, distinct, and desirable image of the product in the target consumer’s mind.

4. The Marketing Mix (The 4Ps & 7Ps)

The Original 4Ps (For Goods):

  • Product: The offering and its features.

  • Price: The amount the customer pays.

  • Place: Where and how the product is distributed to the customer.

    • Process: The systems and processes used to deliver the service.

What is a Committee in Management?

Think of a committee as a formal team or group of people brought together to handle a specific task, solve a problem, or make decisions. It’s not a separate department but an extension of the regular organizational structure. Instead of one manager making all the calls, a committee pools the knowledge and experience of several individuals.

These groups are found at all levels of a company, from the board of directors at the top to project-specific teams on the ground floor. They are especially common in medium to large organizations where diverse expertise is needed.

Simple Example: A university might form a “Disciplinary Committee” with teachers and administrative staff to handle cases of student misconduct. No single person has to bear the entire responsibility of the decision.

Why are Committees Formed? (Key Purposes)

Organizations create committees for several strategic reasons:

  • To Generate Ideas: By bringing people from different departments together, new suggestions and recommendations can emerge that a single person might not think of.

  • To Solve Complex Problems: Committees act as a forum to discuss existing challenges and brainstorm innovative solutions from multiple perspectives.

  • To Develop Policies: They are often tasked with helping create or update important organizational policies, like a company-wide “Work from Home” policy.

  • To Facilitate Exchange: They provide a structured environment for members to freely exchange ideas and information.

Key Characteristics of a Committee 📝

While committees can vary, they generally share a few common traits:

  • A Defined Purpose: A committee is formed to achieve a specific goal, like reviewing the annual budget or planning a new product launch.

  • Fixed Membership: It usually has a set number of members who are appointed (or sometimes elected) based on their expertise or the department they represent.

  • Formal Rules: Committees operate with clear rules and procedures. For instance, a decision might only be valid if a minimum number of members (a quorum) are present.

  • Defined Authority: The committee’s power is clearly spelled out. Some committees can make final decisions, while others can only advise or make recommendations to a senior manager.

Advantages of Using Committees ✅

Committees can be incredibly powerful tools when used correctly. Here are the main benefits:

1. Better Decisions Through Teamwork

The old saying “two heads are better than one” is the core principle here. A committee with members from Marketing, Finance, and Production can analyze a problem from all angles, leading to more well-rounded and effective solutions than a single person could develop.

2. Prevents Misuse of Power

Giving one person too much authority can be risky. A committee distributes power, reducing the chance that one individual will make a biased or poor decision that could harm the organization.

3. Represents Different Interests

Major decisions often affect many departments. Committees ensure that representatives from these different groups have a voice, leading to more balanced and fair outcomes that everyone can support.

4. Improves Coordination and Communication

When representatives from various departments meet regularly, it naturally improves coordination. Information is shared directly, preventing misunderstandings and ensuring everyone is on the same page.

5. Motivates Employees Through Participation

When employees are part of the decision-making process, they feel more valued and are more likely to be committed to implementing the final decision. This participation is a powerful motivational tool.

6. Excellent for Executive Training

For junior executives, being on a committee is a fantastic learning experience. They can observe senior leaders, learn about different parts of the business, and develop their own strategic thinking skills.

Disadvantages of Using Committees ❌

Despite their benefits, committees can also be a source of frustration. A famous sarcastic definition calls a committee “a group of the unfit, appointed by the unwilling, to do the unnecessary.” Here are the common pitfalls:

1. High Cost in Time and Money

Committees are expensive. Imagine five senior managers, each earning a high salary, sitting in a two-hour meeting. If the meeting doesn’t result in a clear decision, the company has wasted a significant amount of time and money.

2. Slow Decision-Making (Analysis Paralysis)

Getting everyone to agree takes time. Committees can get stuck in endless debates and discussions, delaying important actions. This is often why people joke that committees are formed to avoid making a decision.

3. Compromise Over Quality

Often, to get everyone to agree, the final decision is a watered-down compromise that doesn’t fully satisfy anyone. The “best” decision is sometimes sacrificed for a decision that simply has the most votes.

4. Suppression of Good Ideas

In a group setting, some members might hesitate to share a brilliant but unconventional idea for fear of criticism or to avoid conflict. This can lead to “groupthink,” where conformity wins over innovation.

5. Domination by a Few Members

True group judgment is rare. Often, a committee is dominated by its chairperson or one or two loud, influential members. The final decision reflects their opinion rather than the collective wisdom of the group.

6. Nobody is Truly Responsible

This is a major flaw. When a decision is made by a group, who is accountable if it fails? Responsibility is split among all members, making it easy for everyone to blame someone else. This is known as the diffusion of responsibility.

Departmentation Meaning

Departmentation’ or ‘Departmentalisation’ is the process of grouping the activities of an enterprise into several units for the
purpose of administration at all levels. 

Koontz and O’Donnell define a department as designating “a distinct area, division, or branch of an enterprise over which a
manager has authority for the performance of specified activities”.

of facilitating administration is called departmentation. It implies the division of total work of an organisation into individual
functions and sub functions. It is the process of division of organisation into different parts known as departments.

 Departmentation can provide a necessary degree of specialisation of executive activity for efficient performance. It can simplify
the tasks of management within a workable span. It also provides a basis on which the top managers can co-ordinate and control
the activities of the departmental units.

The following factors are basic to divide an organization into departments: 

1. Specialization: 

Department should yield the advantages of specialization. Specialization may be functional such as in marketing, we have advertising, sales promotion etc. or byproducts such as cosmetics, condiments etc.

2. Control: 

Departmentation should serve to make control as effective as possible. One activity intended to serve, as a check on another should be under specific executive. Territorial departments (zonal or districts) may be established in such a way that the performance of one can be checked by comparison with the other. A clean break made between two departments will help in fixing responsibility clear and squarely. 

3. Co-Ordination: 

Quite different activities may be grouped together under one executive, because they need to be co-coordinated. In case of orphan activities like filing, or other service function, the most-use criterion may be applied. That is such activities may be clubbed together with the function that relies on it the most. 

4. Attention:

An activity that is considered to be basic to the success of an enterprise may be given greater attention than others and may, for this purpose, be placed in separate division. 

5. Local Conditions:

While forming departments, attention must be given to local conditions, at the places concerned, for example, the personalities of individuals who will man the organization, or the pattern of informal relationships among people, or the need to combine activities into full-time jobs. 

6. Economy: 

The expenses involved in creating a separate division for an activity or activities should also be considered though this should not become the all- important factor. 

 

The basic need for departmentation is to make the size of each departmental unit manageable and secure the advantages of
specialisation. Grouping of activities and, consequently, of personnel, into departments makes it possible to expand an enterprise
to any extent.

Departmentation is necessary on account of the following reasons: 

1. Advantages of Specialisation: 

Departmentation enables an enterprise to avail of the benefits of specialisation. When every department looks after one major
function, the enterprise is developed and efficiency of operations is increased.

 2. Feeling of Autonomy: 

Normally departments are created in the enterprise with certain degree of autonomy and freedom. The manager in charge of a
department can take independent decisions within the overall framework of the organisation. The feeling of autonomy provides
job satisfaction and motivation which lead to higher efficiency of operations. 

3. Expansion: 

One manager can supervise and direct only a few subordinates. Grouping of activities and personnel into departmentation makes
it possible for the enterprise to expand and grow. 

4. Fixation of Responsibility:

 Departmentation enables each person to know the specific role he is to play in the total organisation. The responsibility for results
can be defined more clearly, precisely and accurately and an individual can be held accountable for the performance of his
responsibility.

 5. Upliftment of Managerial Skill:

 Departmentation helps in the development of managerial skill. the managers
focus their attention on some specific problems which provide them effective on-the-job training. 

6. Facility in Appraisal: 

Appraisal of managerial performance becomes easier when specific tasks are assigned to departmental personnel. Managerial
performance can be measured when the areas of activities are specified and the standards of performance are fixed.
Departmentation provides help in both these areas.
When a broader function is divided into small segments and a particular segment is assigned to each manager, the area to be
appraised is clearly known; and the factors affecting the performance can be pointed out more easily. Similarly, the standards for
performance can be fixed easily because the factors influencing the work performance can be known clearly. Thus, performance
appraisal becomes more effective. 

7. Administrative Control: 

Departmentation is a means of dividing the large and complex organisation into small administrative units. Grouping of activities
and personnel into manageable units facilitates administrative control. Standards of performance for each and every department
can be precisely determined.
